Strategic Partners

CSA Group

The CSA Group excels in addressing emerging, complex issues and technologies. CSA Group is comprised of two organizations: Standards Development and Testing, Inspection, & Certification.

The mission of CSA Group’s standard development organization is to enhance the lives of Canadians through the advancement of standards in the public and private sectors.  They are a leader in standards research, development, education, and advocacy. The technical and management standards developed with their 10,000 members improve safety, health, the environment, and economic efficiency in Canada and beyond.

Now in its fifth edition, the CSA Z462-21, Workplace Electrical Safety standard aims to help workers install, operate, and maintain electrical equipment safely and provide additional safeguards to those who work in close proximity to energized electrical equipment. The Standard provides details on recognized methods for identifying electrical hazards & risk assessment, and defines best safety practices and training to help you work on and around electrical equipment.

Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) endorses the adoption of standards for electrical safety, such as CSA Z462 or NFPA 70E by any person or entity which performs work in an electrical environment. The ESA also believes the creation of an electrical safety plan is an essential element for the protection of workers and equipment against damage from misdirected energy.

7 Key Steps Towards Electrical Safety at Work:
  • Workers, supervisors and facility/business owners must follow safety requirements defined by applicable safety code & the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Written safety procedures are required where anyone is working on electrical equipment.
  • Supervisors and owners must communicate potential shock and arc flash hazards to workers as defined by an electrical equipment hazard analysis.
  • Safety procedures and requirements must be followed by anyone working on electrical equipment.
  • Workers should Lock-out & Tag-out electrical systems and equipment when doing electrical maintenance work.
  • Electrical equipment should be tested to ensure it is de-energized - the use of a multi-meters with fused leads is recommended.
  • Written procedures should include requirements for Personal Protective Equipment.
